RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess the long-term stability of Class II malocclusion treatment with the Cantilever Bite Jumper (CBJ) after 13 years of follow-up. METHODS: The treatment group comprised 10 Class II Division 1 malocclusion patients treated with the CBJ, followed by fixed appliances, analyzed at 3 stages: pretreatment (aged 11.56-14.32 years), posttreatment (aged 16.34-19.58 years), and long-term posttreatment (aged 29.04-32.33 years). The control group included 15 subjects with normal occlusion. Intragroup treatment changes comparison was performed with repeated measures and analysis of variance followed by Tukey tests. Intergroup comparisons regarding the long-term posttreatment changes were performed with t tests. RESULTS: No statistically significant relapse was observed during the follow-up period. Morever, the treated group presented a significantly smaller increase in lower anterior facial height and greater retrusion of the lower lip than the control group in the posttreatment period. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with the CBJ, followed by fixed appliances, is a stable alternative for Class II Division 1 malocclusion correction. The dentoskeletal and soft-tissue changes obtained during treatment remained stable in the long-term posttreatment follow-up.

RESUMO

The presence of root resorption and its correlated factors are concerns that must be considered in orthodontic planning. This case report describes the orthodontic retreatment of a patient with a dental to facial midline discrepancy, a severe apical root resorption, and with maxillary and mandibular incisors presenting accentuated labial tipping and protrusion. The treatment included self-ligating brackets, maxillary unilateral distalization with skeletal anchorage and a mandibular extraction, followed by retraction. The orthodontic planning was based on simple and efficient mechanics and the treatment duration was of 19 months. Based on the acceptable final results it can be assumed that the treatment choices enabled a successful approach, maintaining a stable root condition.

OBJECTIVES: Enzyme inhibitors minimize the degradation of unprotected collagen of dentin promoted by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and cysteine cathepsins (CCs). As the evidence of their effect on the root canal is limited, this study aimed to evaluate the role of EDTA, chlorhexidine and E-64 as antiproteolytic agents on the bond strength (BS) of glass-fiber posts in root canals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-six bovine roots were distributed in groups for each time point (n = 8). Adper Scotchbond Multipurpose (MP)/ RelyX ARC system was used to lute the post according to the treatment: negative control (NC)- water, EDTA- 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, CHX- 2% digluconate chlorhexidine, E-64-5- 5µM E-64, E-64-10- 10µM E-64 and positive control (PC)- MP associated with activator/ catalyst. Then, slices were subjected to push-out test (0.5mm/min) after 24h/6 mons. Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA/Tukey tests. Failure modes were analyzed (40×). RESULTS: The factors treatment, time, root canal third and the interaction between treatment and time were statistically significant. At 24h, no negative interactions were observed among the root dentin, bonding system and post. At 6 mons, CHX improved the BS for middle and apical root thirds. CONCLUSIONS: CHX was able to promote beneficial BS after 6 mons, which was not noted for any other tested enzyme inhibitors.
